Thoughts: I'm a sucker for Hanks and I found this to be a fairly solid and enjoyable Western. Nice to see him working with a child actor again, kind of reminded me of Road To Perdition. The story is pretty simple, Captain Kidd (a kind of news reporter of his day) finds a lost child and is tasked with taking the perilous journey of bringing her back home. The young German actress who plays Johanna has this other-worldly look about her, and she was absolutely fantastic in this. Ultimately the film left me wanting a bit more, and never really hit that high point either emotionally or with the action. I definitely wouldn't rank it very high on my list of top Westerns, but it still had its moments and Hanks and the girl were great.

Thoughts: The Guest is that rare bird of midnight movie greatness that manages to be exciting, suspenseful and gleefully violent at times. It makes you wish more horror filmmakers would step out of their comfort zone from time to time and experiment with genre a bit more. The story is nothing new, a family takes in a drifter that clearly has ulterior motives. We are along for the ride but just as conflicted as the family, we want to like David but the guy is clearly a psycho. David is kind of like that sketchy pitbull that protects you but can also turn on you at any moment. Very impressed with Dan Stevens, apparently he was mainly doing period British pieces before stepping into this role and he absolutely kills it. Maika Monroe also had great screen presence, sort of like a young Diane Lane with bleach blonde hair. Overall this is as fun as midnight movies get, with a killer retro new wave/electronic soundtrack.

Thoughts: I feel like Netflix has an overabundance of these indie, direct to streaming sci-fi films. I decided to give this one a try because it had a cool concept and the trailer was pretty damn impressive. Well the movie is kind of cool and engaging for the most part. Big fan of Maika Monroe after seeing her in The Guest, here she makes for quite the scream queen. It's easy to get caught up in the novelty and relevance of the smart-home concerns taken to the extreme. Overall this was just a mediocre film that I wanted to reach that next level but sadly never does.

Thoughts: The success of Van Damme and Seagal martial arts films of the late 80s/early 90s paved the way for some interesting one-off flicks like the somewhat forgotten Only The Strong (Perfect Weapon also comes to mind). Being that this was conceived by the same writer/director as Lionheart and Double Impact, I'm sure this was initially planned as a Van Damme movie (it sure does feel like one). But being that this is introducing casual viewers to the Brazilian martial art Capoeira, they needed someone more ethnic looking. Enter Marc Decascos, as the soldier turned teacher of bad students. Like Van Damme, Decascos is very likeable, with the charm and moves to back it up. Overall this was an enjoyable entry in the teacher-student genre (with a lot of parallels to The Substitute which came out 3 years later), sure it has its typical B-movie trappings and sillyness but the underdog story combined with redemption of the rag tag group of ne'er do well students raises it a notch above the rest. How can you not love that chanting bananaway, bananaway banana...

Thoughts: I rarely give a movie a flawless ten stars, but The Revenant just happens to be that movie. Like Herzog's Aguirre The Wrath of God (a personal favorite), it's as beautiful and poetic as it is haunting and brutal. It somehow manages to combine the visual wonder of a Terence Malick film with the harsh brutality of a Mel Gibson film. It's the story of survival and revenge and how one's lust for revenge fuels their will to survive at all costs. DiCaprio finally earning his much deserved Oscar (afterall he did eat raw fish and a bison liver), while I was reminded again how great Tom Hardy was in this. Like someone plucked right from the period. The natural light photography by the always impressive Lubieski and the remote wilderness locations were a joy to behold. It's a movie you never want to end and could easily watch eight more hours of it. It's the type of film that is rarely made nowadays which makes it all the more of a real treat for cinephiles like myself.

Thoughts: I was thumbing through used DVDs at my local Good Will store when I came across this forgotten gem. Just when I thought I'd seen every MJF movie along comes Greedy, which came at the end of his star-powered career in the mid-90s (with The Frighteners being the only standout movie released after). Greedy is an interesting film that manages to blend comedy and drama together nicely, and almost reminded me of Judd Apatow movies in that sense (minus the dick jokes). The diabolical heirs to their uncle's fortune with their catty infighting, played with great comedic timing by Ed Begley Jr, Colleen Camp, and Phil Hartman. Overall this is a cozy little dramedy that gets a little long winded, but the strong ensemble cast with MJF at the center makes it enjoyable.

Thoughts: Absolutely loved this series, which traces the origins and progression of hip hop over the years. I was a teenager during the 90s when hip hop reached its peak, and I considered myself pretty knowledgeable of the history but this series definitely taught me a thing or two. This feels like a real passion project, done with respect and admiration for the artform. Hip hop was a cultural phenomenon more so than just a music genre, and this series presents that in all its grime and glory. Very extensive interviews with damn near everyone who was involved make this a real treat for fans. Highly recommended.
